Jack Carroll interview: Bobby's lies land Roy in more trouble

Why do you think Bobby was so suspicious of Roy in the beginning?

It was that thing of Bobby being new to the street and outwardly Roy has a bit of a strange manner, kind of a loner, and that’s how he appears to any stranger upon first meeting him. But then you’ve got all the people on the street who know Roy and know what a lovely man he is fighting his corner, and then on the other hand you have the viewers who spent all these years with Roy and went through all the heartbreak with Hayley and built up a real bond with this character – and they can’t intervene – but they know Roy is a lovely man and they have to watch as a big misunderstanding drags his name through the mud.

When did Bobby’s opinion of Roy change?

I think there’s a moment where he does take on board what other members of the street have said about Roy and that kind of starts to filter in – but there’s a sense of the wheels are already in motion and what’s been done can’t be undone. He’s let the cat out the bag, has Bobby a little bit, and I think that’s probably before he was in full possession of the facts. He’s not a bad person, is Bobby, but he’s quick to jump to conclusions and that’s been the big problem.

Is that why he provided the police with a false statement?

Yes, I think it’s a naïve and immature attempt to right the wrong for someone who he has just subsequently found out is a nice bloke. It’s not the best way of going about it but it’s Bobby’s way of trying to rectify his mistake and unfortunately what he’s done is make things 10 times worse.

Roy is so honest and wouldn’t have wanted Bobby to have done this… does he regret it/feel guilty?

He goes back and forth between the two emotions; he’s done it for the right reasons but it’s probably the wrong action, and I think when you are backed into a corner it can be very hard to admit that you’ve made a mistake, so there’s a little bit of that as well, he kind of gets a little bit prickly and angry when he’s questioned about it.

Could there be consequences for Bobby if he gets found out?

I think yes, that is usually what happens in these situations and certainly DS Swain is not the sort of character that you want to get on the wrong side of, especially when she’s got a bee in her bonnet about something.

Where does Carla stand on what Bobby has done?

The dynamic between Bobby and Carla has really grown and she’s really come to accept his flaws and faults and grown really fond of him as a family member, but unfortunately it is those same flaws and faults that start to get her embroiled in legal problems. This is real stuff – it’s not just Bobby sitting on the sofa and not pulling his weight, this could have tangible consequences for both of their lives.

Peter Ash interview: Paul's dad Denny arrives on Coronation Street

So first of all, the week starts with Paul appearing on Amy's radio show. How does that all go for him?

Yes, that's quite an interesting one! Bernie initially sets it up because she thinks it'd be a good thing for Paul, to lift his spirits up. But then obviously, when he's doing the interview, he kind of gets a bit passionate and talks about the way people treat disabled people. On the way to the interview he had a problem with ordering a taxi, getting a taxi that's going to fit his wheelchair in, they send the wrong one, and then the taxi driver's a bit of an ass. So he's got that on his mind. That kind of comes out in the interview when he gets a little bit passionate, a bit heated, and he drops a swear on live radio. So he's a little bit worried he might have kind of got Amy in trouble!

Then his dad Denny rocks up.

I think through that interview is how Denny, Paul and Gemma's biological dad, gets wind of Paul through that, really. He does show up completely unexpectedly at the flat, which takes Paul by surprise. I think had it been a couple years ago, without the MND diagnosis, he probably would have told his dad to do one, basically. Because he wasn't a nice person at all. But I think Paul has a different outlook now because obviously he's dying, and I think he's just got a different way of looking at that. So he gives him a chance and he goes out for a drink with his dad. They kind of get on all right, because Denny's just treats him like a normal person…

Was his dad violent towards him in the past?

Yes, there's references to that. So he was definitely not a nice person at all. And in fact, I don't think he's changed that much! He leaves Paul alone for a bit, they're gonna watch a film and just hang out together. But then Denny goes out, and he shouldn't really leave him alone, but he leaves him alone too long. Paul has a bit of a coughing fit, which really kind of shakes up Denny when he does eventually come back to the flat.

Paul tries to call an ambulance but he's not able to.

Yeah, he's having a real problem breathing. From the day before, when he goes to the pub with Denny, he drinks a bit too much and he's a little bit sick that day, I think it's still on his lungs, and that's what causes the coughing fit the next day.

What does everyone else think about him being back? Because I don't think Billy is particularly impressed with him.

Oh, no, not at all. Well, at first, to be fair, he's not too bad. Because obviously he's all about forgiveness. And that's kind of where Paul's head is at the moment with his new kind of outlook on the short life he's got left. But Billy is really, really not impressed after he finds out that he's took me to the pub, he's got me pissed, he's taken my neck collar off, which helps support the weight of his head. And obviously Paul’s sick when we come back to the flat, so Billy's really not happy with him.

How about Bernie and Gemma? What do they think about him being back?

They're not impressed at all. I mean, I think Paul's probably the one that's the most positive about his return, at the start anyway. He's short of time, and he wants to smooth anything over he can before his time's up, really.

Paul’s symptoms have been getting progressively worse, how hard are you finding that physical side of things?

In some ways it is less difficult to play as Paul moves a lot less and I am in the chair a lot of the time. I also find that when I am in the chair my arm automatically goes into position, there is a certain amount of muscle memory when you do something so often. The voice has been something I have worked on a lot, I have to speak so that people can understand but show that Paul is having difficulty speaking. I also feel a responsibility to make sure the portrayal is accurate.

How do you wind down at the end of the day after filming those scenes?

I have always been really good at not taking the job home with me but I also remember that for me I am playing the role and for the people who are living with MND it is their life, they can’t get a break from it.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 20 April 2024

Apologies for absence last Friday - I was off to Bari on Saturday and ran out of time.  Tonight in Weatherfield Nick looks continually perplexed as Leanne continues to spout extensive (and expensive) Institute gobbledegook concerning reality coding which explains why an anniversary party last night spent more than normal and some of the family will come back for another meal today.  To me it sounds a lot like the manifestation obsession/fad a few years ago which told the unwary that they could achieve their aims by visualising and magically it happens.  As Nick (and Toyah later) tries to point out - perhaps they just did their job as a Bistro to the best of their abilities and the family actually enjoyed it so much they wanted to do it all again!  The daughter of the family, Anwen, (Maya Irving Piper) sees Sam playing chess in the corner of the Bistro and they have a game (she opens with the Slav Defence - which is wrong because she was playing white and it is a plan used by Black) - the outcome is a draw, although she does suggest Sam could teach her some new moves.  She is a member of a chess club in Worsley and suggests that Sam joins the club.  Obviously she has not yet encountered Hope.  Sam meanwhile hears Leanne espousing reality coding and starts reading some of the Institute literature in the vain hope that it will help free Roy.  Toyah is not convinced by Sam's reading matter either.  Sam later says that the Institute is a load of round objects.  Leanne and Toyah argue over the subject as well.  Nick remains perplexed.

Daniel decides to reach out to his vast web of underworld contacts in the hope that they have a lead on the missing Lauren.  No - he phones Nicky (who luckily still has the same number and is now an outreach worker with those working in her former profession) and she brings Deanna along to a meeting with Daniel in the precinct (hardly keeping the low profile he promised Bethany).  Max and Bobby have been following Daniel as the former is convinced of Daniel's guilt and take the opportunity of filming his meeting to give DS Swain even more evidence on which to question Daniel given that he took some clothes to the charity shop which might be linked to Bobby's false story of an intruder in a furry parka.  DS Swain rocks up and accuses Daniel of seeing two known sex workers in front of Bethany and we are into another interview session at the police station.  He is later released but has to face the wrath of Bethany - so she chucks him out of Sarah's flat.

Dee Dee is worried as Nina reports that Roy will not leave his cell for a visit - he later tells Nina that he could not withstand the noise outside his cell.  She already knows about Bobby's new statement which could collapse the case against Roy.  She also admits she had a drink with Joel - Michael tries to warn her off.  It later becomes clear that Dee Dee is receiving phone calls and emails threatening her with death for being Roy's solicitor - which means that Joel helps calm her down and he misses his meeting with his daughter.  There is also an odd moment when the above appeared on Dee Dee's screen - to which I can only ask - is the gambling habit genetically linked?  Joel and Dee Dee report the harassment to the police.  Later in the Rovers Abi talks about parenting and Dee Dee offers to support when he sees his daughter.  Michael however cold shoulders Joel when invited to join them for a drink - but cannot get served as there are no bar staff visible.

Adam and Dee Dee are drowning under the workload caused by Alya's departure and the loss of at least one client.  Adam tries to apologise to Alya - but even though she has been sucked in by the flattery from her new employer (who are really only interested in the clients she can convince to move with her) she does think about changing her mind - but eventually decides that Fabians is the answer after Michael reports Adam's earlier assertion that Alya would return for more money.  Alya uses Michael as her witness when she tells Adam to his face that he can take his job and stuff it where the sun does not shine!  Meanwhile all scenes involving Alya are being shot only showing her face and little else - I wonder why?

Nicky visits Daniel in his flat and the police have seen her as well - she has heard nothing about Lauren - but she does say that Roy was never a client of hers.  Nicky explains about the abuse and predators that exist and the difficulties which girls like Lauren encounter.  And just as Nicky is about to go Bethany comes in the front door.  Nicky tells her why she is supporting Daniel and departs.  Daniel says that it is a two horse race between him and Roy - and so he is no longer certain about Roy.

Come on everyone - free Cropper now.  Even Tony Blair knew about Deirdre - what is Rishi doing about this huge miscarriage of justice? Obviously not attempting any vote winning public comments.

Which just about wraps it up for me this week.  Be careful out there - even your best friends and neighbours can be convinced that you have killed an employee.
